The One Who Makes Books

Gregor Huber, Graphic Designer

Watch video

Gregor Huber will discuss his deep engagement in the art and craft of bookmaking. Working at the intersection of design, art, and research, he collaborates with artists, researchers, and institutions to create publications that are not only visually compelling but also conceptually rich. His approach involves tailoring each book’s design to its unique content and context, ensuring that the physical form and graphic language of the book enhance the subject matter and reader experience. Huber’s work is recognized for its innovation and has garnered national and international awards, reflecting his commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional book design.

Through his publishing initiative Edition Hors-Sujet, Huber produces books that often result from close partnerships and collective editorial processes. For example, in the publication Peter Warshall: Squirrels on Earth and Stars Above, Huber collaborated with editors and institutions to assemble and design a collection that brings together essays, lectures, and archival materials in a cohesive, thoughtfully structured volume. His role as a book maker extends beyond graphic design to encompass curation, editing, and the orchestration of multidisciplinary teams, resulting in publications that are both intellectually engaging and aesthetically distinctive.

Gregor Huber is a designer and artist living in Zurich, Switzerland, and New York, USA. He codirects the design studio Huber/Sterzinger and the publishing initiative Edition Hors-Sujet.

The Berlage Sessions is a thematic series exploring critical approaches to investigate architecture’s history and theory. Its spring 2025 edition, The Architect’s Friends, interrogates interdisciplinary dynamics between architects and designers. The series will dissect collaborative processes, emphasizing mutual creative exchange across design disciplines such as graphic design, photography, and spatial practice.
