Talks on Transformation
The Future of the Architectural Design Studio
How should the architectural design studio change when the material world it draws on can no longer be treated as endless? Bringing theory and practice into dialogue, this Berlage Keynote explores the question through a shared discussion informed by two recent publications. These include the latest issue of OASE 122–123, “Ecological Pedagogies,” and Reuse in Teaching: The Future of the Architectural Design Studio, which together establish the theoretical framework for the discussion. Both examine how architectural education is responding to the transition towards a circular economy. Three student projects from The Berlage, TU Delft, and TU Wien then put these ideas into action, each testing a different way of designing with what already exists. Moving from framework to practice, the evening closes with an open discussion on how design and teaching methods must evolve, and on how architecture can meet a new climate reality through the act of building itself.
Participants will include Liselotte Bliak, Salomon Frausto, Lorenzo De Chiffre, Juliette de Metz, Dominga Natho, Verena Oberrauch. Katharina Paschburg, and Elsbeth Ronner.
The Berlage Keynotes, part of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment’s Public Program, is an ongoing series in which architects, designers, and thinkers from diverse disciplines and contexts discuss how their work engages contemporary issues. In this edition, the series turns to the question of transformation in architectural education. This event is co-organized with Urban Architecture Group, Situated Architecture Section, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment; OASE, TU Wien, and Finstral AG.
