From Environment to Photography

Cristóbal Palma

Athanasius Kircher, Camera obscura, 1646.

In this lecture, Santiago-based architecture photographer Cristóbal Palma will present an insight into his practice spanning from capturing environments with photography and video to other various projects such as the typological record of the caracoles comerciales (commercial 'snail' centers) that were built in Chile in the ’70s and ’80s and the commission of a series of short films for the Chilean Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2012.

Cristóbal Palma (1974, Oxford, UK) studied at the Architectural Association (AA) in London to then start his career as a photographer focused primarily on architecture and the built environment. In 2008 he established Estudio Palma in Santiago, Chile where he currently resides and works. Some of his recent editorial work includes commissions for titles such as: Monocle, Dwell, Wallpaper, Travel + Leisure and Architectural Digest.

The Berlage Sessions, a seven-part seminar series entitled “Architecture’s Transpositions,” examines the mediatic disciplinary transfers, from sixteenth-century abstracted geometries to twenty-first-century augmented realities. Topics will include the digitization of maps, the creation of digital replicas of landscapes, the modelling of multisensory extended reality experiences, the framing and photographing of buildings, and the imagined histories of architectural drawings and models.
