From Auto to Architecture

Setting A Course

This online afternoon symposium will serve as the first encounter with the intersections of car design and architecture discourse. Ranging from the scale of the car to the city, topics will include a historical overview on the car’s influence on architectural and urban discourse in the United States and beyond, the use of photography by automobile manufacturers, an examination of the architect’s long-standing affection for the Citroën DS, an exploration on iconic encounters between architecture and car design, and how highways and new forms of mobility have shaped cities from the postwar period to the present.

Speakers will include: Gabrielle Esperdy, author of American Autotopia; Benedict Redgrove, artist, London; Christian Sumi, author of The Goddess–La Déesse; Bert Voet, co-author of Carchitecture; and Even Smith Wergeland, associate professor, Oslo School of Architecture and Design.

It is the first of a series of events organized on the occasion of “The Auto Drives Architecture” research project, the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment’s contribution to a forthcoming exhibition opening in spring 2022.
